Seriously try not to read it

You rebel.

The phenomenon you just experienced is called ‘Negative suggestion’. It’s a psychological theory that invites defiance.

The ADA (American Psychological Association) defines it as “a statement intended to deter or suppress a feeling, thought, or action on the part of another person.”

Ironically, it builds an urge in humans to do the exact opposite of what’s suggested.

It’s particularly strong in Children and you may recognize occasions where, in the past, you’ve rebelled against authority once given negative instructions like:

  • Don’t spend it all on candy.

  • Don’t touch that.

As adults, we tend to rebel if we feel we’re being influenced. When you’re on a diet and you’re told you can’t have bread — all you want from that moment on is bread.

You eventually cave and your diet feels ruined. It was inevitable.

Understanding ‘negative suggestion’ helps you rationalize your own behaviours. It’s not that you have no willpower or hate authority, it’s that you’ve been preconditioned to disobey when you feel forced.
