How to Deal with Critics & Bullies Online
5 months ago I got the best advice ever on how to deal with critics & bullies online.
If you do anything publicly on the internet, that people can see or buy, you’re inviting criticism.
Whether you like it or not, as your audience, sales and reach intensify, so will your detractors.
They swim into your net, like bycatch—and they start to complain about your content and products like a petulant adult with a happy meal. They lack the self-awareness to know that it’s just not for them.
The hate inside of them flows out and is thrown full force, at you.
David Goggins says:
“You will never meet a hater doing better than you.”
But sometimes it’s hard to detach yourself from their attack and see it for what it is.
You ask yourself:
Are they right?
Is that how I’m coming across?
If this stranger’s reaction is that strong, did I honestly provoke it?
Do I really deserve this hate?
It’s a downward spiral of self-loathing, anxiety and anger. The exact outcome your assailant was trying to provoke. To make you feel how they feel inside.
Then I stumbled upon this fantastic podcast called Modern Wisdom. Where the host explains how he’s learned to rationalize the hate as his podcast grows.
I’ve timestamped the exact section for you (21:56). It’s the best advice I’ve ever heard on the subject—and if it helped me, it’ll help you too.
