Sometimes the Best Way to Give Advice is to Not Give Advice
The subtle art of silence between friends
The subtle art of silence between friends
To friends, the only thing worse than the wrong advice is unsolicited advice.
Knowing when to say it, is better than knowing what to say.
If your intention is to help, you need to ensure the recipient is ready to catch what you’re throwing out there… or it won’t land.
If they’re not ready to hear it, they’ll reject it — whether you’re wrong or right.
By asking the person if they actually want to hear your opinion or thoughts, you’ll be showing support without arrogance.
Often people know the answer, they just have to uncover it for themselves. In some cases, this could be a long process… but it’s their process.
You can’t expect others to live their lives by your standards, just as much as you shouldn’t be held to theirs.
Silence, in this instance, is golden.
